| National
Parks: Students learn history of the National Park System as
they explore the geographic or historic significance of various national
parks in each of the U.S. regions studied in their social studies
curriculum. HAL students learn about a variety of parks before they chose
one on which to become an expert. Oral presentations complete with
brochures, posters and maps are introduced to classmates at the end of the
unit.
Exploring with Lewis and Clark:
Students develop research skills in the area of
biography and history as they go with Lewis and Clark on their historic
expedition. HAL students also practice computer skills as they map
their trip through Nebraska and introduce their work in their classroom.
Go Figure:
Students are challenged with a fast paced variety of math
and logic problems. By wrapping presents they learn about probability and
permutations. They go on logical adVENNtures with Venn diagrams. There
is a new challenge everyday.
It's Amazing I'm Doing Algebra:
Students are challenged to understand the principles of
algebra by using a hands-on approach to learning. Each student has a set
of manipulatives that enhance the learning experience and puts the logic
that encompasses algebra into a concrete format. A series of sequential
lessons lets the students discover the attributes of algebraic
expressions.
Creature Feature:
Science, social studies, language arts and art combine in this examination
of animals and adaptations. The students will be introduced to realms of
the world and how replacement species in the various habitats are
specially adapted to the geographical and climatic changes in an area
.
Color My Country:
This cross curricular unit gives students the opportunity to acquire and
use
mapping and graphing skills as it incorporates writing,
mathematics and artistic endeavors into a
geographical format.
Astronaut Adventure:
This unit introduces the student to the
jobs and trials of astronauts adapting to the space environment. Many
hands-on activities and experiments let the student get a glimpse of how
astronauts train for space travel. Activities include nutrition, affects
on the body, space suits and working in space and learning to overcome
micro-gravity.
Writing Creatively:
Students employ the Six Trait Writing Model as they learn how to use
literary elements in their writing. Use of the computer as a powerful
editing instrument is also developed in this unit. The emphasis is on word
choice and fluency.
