A look at the HAL fourth grade units

***Since one of the HAL goals is to extend the regular classroom curriculum, all of these units have ties to the fourth grade curriculum. The unit of study that is presented varies from building to building as choices are made in consultation with individual classroom teachers.***

National Parks: Students learn history of the National Park System as they explore the geographic or historic significance of various national parks in each of the U.S. regions studied in their social studies curriculum. HAL students learn about a variety of parks before they chose one on which to become an expert. Oral presentations complete with brochures, posters and maps are introduced to classmates at the end of the unit.

Exploring with Lewis and Clark: Students develop research skills in the area of biography and history as they go with Lewis and Clark on their historic expedition.  HAL students also practice computer skills as they map their trip through Nebraska and introduce their work in their classroom.

Go Figure: Students are challenged with a fast paced variety of math and logic problems.  By wrapping presents they learn about probability and permutations.  They go on logical adVENNtures with Venn diagrams.  There is a new challenge everyday.

It's Amazing I'm Doing Algebra: Students are challenged to understand the principles of algebra by using a hands-on approach to learning. Each student has a set of manipulatives that enhance the learning experience and puts the logic that encompasses algebra into a concrete format. A series of sequential lessons lets the students  discover the attributes of algebraic expressions.

Creature Feature Science, social studies, language arts and art combine in this examination of animals and adaptations. The students will be introduced to realms of the world and how replacement species in the various habitats are specially adapted to the geographical and climatic changes in an area .

Color My Country: This cross curricular unit gives students the opportunity to acquire and use mapping and graphing skills as it incorporates writing, mathematics and artistic endeavors into a geographical format.

Astronaut Adventure: This unit introduces the student to the jobs and trials of astronauts adapting to the space environment. Many hands-on activities and experiments let the student get a glimpse of how astronauts train for space travel. Activities include nutrition, affects on the body, space suits and working in space and learning to overcome micro-gravity.

Writing Creatively:  Students employ the Six Trait Writing Model as they learn how to use literary elements in their writing. Use of the computer as a powerful editing instrument is also developed in this unit. The emphasis is on word choice and fluency.
