| Hands On
Equations: part 2:
Students continue their learning of the
fundamentals of algebraic linear equations. The students will be
introduced to the concepts of positive and negative integers and how to
solve equations with manipulatives and on paper. Geometrical Design:
A foundation of geometrical vocabulary will be
used in introductory skills lessons to familiarize the students with one,
two and three dimensional geometric theories. They will be shown how to
apply each concept to an artistic endeavor. In the final project, students
will have a choice of several different two or three dimensional art
projects that employ the geometrical concepts and theories taught in the
unit.
Math Strategies:
Students learn the techniques and strategies of logical
thinking and analysis using a variety of math topics.
This unit covers math strategies using a wide array of mathematical and
scientific concepts and principles. There are new challenges daily as the
students learn to apply logic and rationally reason through math problems.
Consumer Research:
The student learns the scientific method
while conduction experiments with consumer products. The students learn to
research and analyze information before making a hypothesis. They learn
how to design an experiment, collect data during an experiment and write
up a solid conclusion. This unit is an introduction to the experimental
design unit that will be developed in sixth grade.
Tour Guide:This
is a cross curriculum unit that focuses on map skills, human geography,
and
monetary skills in the format of
understanding the necessary steps involved in planning an excursion to
another place. The students will
learn the basics of planning and developing a tour to a place of their
choice. Researching places of
interest and cost for necessary housing and fares will be a part of this
unit.
Create a Country:
Students use information gathered from research to identify geographical
features and understand political
states as they create a country complete with landforms, cities, history
and political alliances.
Map It!:
The students learn about the history of
mapmaking and cartography and then use maps for various analytical
thinking activities. The students gain an understanding of the various
maps and their uses. On line, interactive maps and G.P.S. devices will be
introduced and explored within this unit of study.
Challenge Boxes:
Challenges from social
studies, science, language arts and creative thinking are incorporated
into various boxes. Each box focuses on higher level thinking skills and
independent study as students gain new insight into problems, solutions
and research skills.
Once Upon a Tale:
Students employ the Six Trait Writing Model as they learn
how to use literary elements in writing a fable or fractured fairy tale.
Use of the computer as a powerful editing instrument is also developed in
this unit. The students will convert their original stories to a playlet
or skit to present.
