Learning About Plants

We spent our week learning about plants.  We discussed the parts of plants and the function of each part.  We also talked about the life cycle of a plant.  Below are pictures of our activities.

Here's the song the we learned about plant parts.  We sang it to the tune of  "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes".

We learned that seeds are all different shapes, sizes, and colors.  We also read that they can travel by wind, water, or animals.  We found that seeds can be very sticky and even stick to our clothes.  We might be 'planting' seeds and not even know it!

We soaked seeds in water overnight and then took them apart.  We took off the seed coat and found the sprout that would become the root.  We could also see the leaves.  They were very tiny and white.

We planted seeds in different conditions.  We are going to record what happens to each seed.  We also planted a class garden and individual plants in cups so that we can take them home.

We planted bean seeds in a 'greenhouse'.  So far, we have a lot of condensation and one small sprout.  Check back next week to see the results.

Mrs. Brockhaus let us take apart flowers to see the different parts.

We saw the petals and pollen on some of them.

We learned that celery is really the stem of a plant.  We put the celery in red water to see what would happen...

In one day, it turned red!  We could especially see the red coloring on the tips of the leaves (at the end of the veins).

We put white carnations in colored water.  If our theory of water traveling up the stem is correct, they should turn colors.

We were right!  They did change colors.  Interestingly, the one in orange water turned yellow and the one in purple water turned blue.  Maybe we didn't mix the colors good enough??

We made an art project to show how seeds grow with light, water, and air.  As you unfold the project, the plants grow, and grow, and grow!

We created plants and labeled their parts.  After we were done our class bee flew around and pollinated (with baby powder) our plants.

Friday we learned about roots.  Mrs. Brockhaus went out in the field and pulled up some different kinds of plants so that we could study their roots.  She even got a worm.  Can you spot it in the picture?

We used magnifying glasses to study the roots.  We discovered long roots and root hairs.  Mrs. Alff also gave us some sprouted potatoes to study.
