More About The Ocean

 

Shark Information...

Whale sharks eat plankton.

Sharks must keep moving to live.

Some sharks have over 3000 teeth.

They can grow a new tooth in one day.

They have gill slits to breathe.

They have sharp scales covering their bodies.

They don’t have feet.

Sharks rarely attack people.

They eat plankton, crabs, lobsters, seals, fish, other sharks, and “K” Kids.

Sharks have an amazing sense of smell.  They can smell 1 drop of blood in a swimming pool.

They have great eyesight.

They have a top fin to keep them balanced.

They have tail fins to help them swim.

Sharks do not have bones.  They have cartilage.

Their eyes are similar to a cat.

Some sharks can swim up to 50 miles an hour.

Great white sharks can stick their heads out of the water.

 

Dangerous sharks!

Cool sea turtles!

Sea Turtle Information...

They don’t have teeth.

They have strong beaks to crush their food.

They lay eggs in the sand.

They eat crabs, jellyfish, and plants.

They live in warm water often by coral reefs.

They are good swimmers.

They are endangered.

They have flippers.

The babies are born in nests of sand on the beach and have to scramble to the water for safety.

Crabs, raccoons, and sea gulls eat the babies as they go to the water.

They can be under water for several hours before coming up for air.

Sea turtles are reptiles.

Sea turtles can be up to 7 feet long.

Sea turtle eggs are the size of a ping pong ball.

You cannot take off their shell.

 

 

Whale Information...

Killer whales are also called orcas.

Big whales have 2 blowholes.

Dolphins are a kind of whale.

They can jump out of the water.

They breathe through their blowholes.

The toothed whales eat fish.

The biggest whale is the blue whale.

Dolphins can jump up to 20 feet out of the water.

Whales are mammals.

Smaller whales have 2 blowholes.

Large whales have baleen.

They live in all oceans.

Sperm whales are the largest toothed whales.

A whale’s tail moves up and down.  Fish tails move side-to-side.

A whale’s tail is called a fluke.

Whales live in groups called pods.

 

 

We made Whale Watching books.

We measure whales out on the playground. 

The students are at 10 foot intervals to measure a blue whale.  Blue whales can be 100 feet long!  We decided that whales wouldn't make very good classroom pets!?

For math, we graphed our favorite ocean animal.  Sharks were the class favorite.. 

Here's one of the pages from our ocean pop-up book.  It will be coming home with each of the "K" Kids soon.  Mrs. Brockhaus just has to add the index to the back of the book.
