Down on the Farm

We started learning about farms this week.  We have a farm bulletin/word board.  Each day we learned about one farm animal.  We read informational stories about each animal, wrote 5 facts, made a large stuffed animal to hang in our classroom, and made individual animals.

Our class cow, Clarabelle

Cow Facts
  1. Baby cows are called calves.

  2. Cow chew their cuds.

  3. Cows have 4 stomachs

  4. Cows eat grass, hay, and grain.

  5. Cows have babies when they are 2 years old.

  6. Cows give us milk, cheese, cream, ice cream, yogurt, steak, hamburger, and leather.

Over Easter break, Mrs. Brockhaus visited her parents' farm.  Here are her children feeding baby calves.  They have big baby bottles!

This is Mrs. Brockhaus' dad.  He's been a farmer all of his life.  We watched a video from his farm and from some of his neighboring farms.  We had some questions, so we wrote him a letter.  We're hoping to hear back from him soon.

We learned how to draw cows.  It wasn't easy!

Our garden is growing!

Our Gifford Farm Chart...we can change the words to make the song about different animals.  Sometimes we even change the words to make the animals say different, funny sounds!

Here's our muddy class pig.

Pig Facts
  1. Baby pigs are called piglets.  The mommy is a sow.  The daddy is a boar.

  2. Pigs give us ham, sausage, bacon, leather, marshmallows, bristles for paint brushes, heart valves, and insulin.

  3. Pigs eat grain, roots, meat, and table scraps.

  4. Pigs have snouts for digging.

  5. Pigs don't sweat so they need mud to keep cool.

We did 'pig math'.  We added the number of pink and brown pigs in the pig pen.

We made messy, muddy pigs.

Pigs need mud to keep cool and prevent sunburns.l
