We read Jan Brett's The Mitten.  Then we acted out the story, sewed our own mittens, and created characters to retell the story.

Here's our mitten and characters from the story.

Retelling the story is fun!

We listed some words that we might want to use in our journals this month.

We graphed our favorite color of mittens.

We made a mitten pop-up book.  We'll be bringing it home for you all to see.

Here's one of the pages from our book.

We played the game, Melt-An-Ice-Cube.  Here were the rules...

"Oh, no!  I rolled a 2 and this ice cube is COLD!"

Floating the ice cube for 10 seconds was easy.

"This game is crazy!  I'm going to have my parents try it at home!"

Mrs. Brockhaus cleaned her house and found a whole bunch of Polly Pockets.  It makes a new and fun center.

Reading in the igloo is more fun than reading at our 'old' reading center.

What can we possibly be doing with toilet paper?

and grated soap?

Clean Mud!!

Even Mrs. Roberts stopped to check out our Clean Mud.

Winter is the perfect time to learn about static electricity!

After we learned about static electricity and watched the "Magic School Bus Gets Energized", we explored with electricity and circuits.  Here we are lighting up a light bulb.

We read several books about an odd character named Tacky.  These books were 'narrative text'.  They all had the main character named Tacky

Here are some of our Tacky's.  Aren't they cute?

Then we read some informational books about penguins.

Here are some of the facts that we learned.

Brady's family came for a visit and made thumbprint penguins with us.

We painted and measure our penguins.  How may cubes tall is this one?

We ate penguin food for math.  While we moved our fish around and ate them, Mrs. Brockhaus wrote equations to match.  We really liked the subtraction because making the fish disappear was yummy.

We learned the poem "5 Little Snowmen" and made our own snowmen.  Aren't they cute?
