Week 3 of our Holiday Travels

"Noel" is Christmas in France.  Don't you love our beautiful banner?

Wednesday, we traveled back to Germany and learned about the tradition of candy canes...

Did you know that candy canes started out as simple peppermint sticks to keep children quiet in church?

...and gingerbread.  We sang about the Gingerbread Man and read several versions of the story.

Here's a sample of the Gingerbread people that we made with our Sixth Grade Buddies.

We baked real gingerbread cookies...

...ummm, ummm, good!.

Then we graphed how we ate our gingerbread men.  Most of us ate the legs first.

After we read the Gingerbread Man stories, we made the characters from the story so that we could retell the story to our families.  With our fiction stories, we have been discussing the characters and setting.  As you read at home, you can ask your child about the characters and setting, as well.

Here's our map on our trip to Sweden where we learned about Santa Lucia.

And here are some samples of our Lucia wreathes and Star Boy hats.
