Third Grade Essential Objectives

What are Essential Objectives?

Each school district in the state of Nebraska must determine what is most important for students to learn at each grade level. Standards are the content that students should know or be able to do. Bellevue Public Schools has determined standards for every core subject area at each grade level. Essential Objectives are Bellevue's academic learning standards which have been approved by the Nebraska Department of Education as exceeding the state standards.

 

The Essential Objective Achievement Levels are:

Advanced – objective mastered

Proficient – objective mastered

Progressing – objective not mastered

Beginning – objective not mastered

 

When an objective is not mastered, the skill will continue to be worked on by the student and the teacher until he/she is prepared to be tested again.

          Each time an Essential Objective is taken, you will receive your child’s score and achievement level.  Since these tests are summative assessments, we are not permitted to send the actual test home, however tests are available at conferences.  You child will always be given a chance to see his/her results in the classroom.

The following skills will be assessed for

your third grade student this year.

 

 

                                           Language Arts          

Uses clear, coherent oral communication.

Produces narrative pieces of writing.

Writes in the content areas.

Learn and apply knowledge of print, phonological awareness, structural analysis skills, fluency strategies, vocabulary skills, and comprehension strategies to construct meaning of grade level text.

Identifies and uses appropriate resources to locate information to be applied to learning goals.

                                  Math

Students will communicate number sense concepts using multiple representations to reason, solve problems, and make connections within mathematics and across disciplines.

Concepts include:  place value, compare and order numbers, add and subtract up to 4 digit numbers with regrouping, decimals, fractions, rounding, multiplication

 
Students will communicate geometric concepts and measurement concepts using multiple representations to reason, solve problems, and make connections within mathematics and across disciplines.

Concepts include:  identifying parts of 2 and 3 dimensional figures, symmetry, perimeter, money, time, length, weight, capacity/volume

 
Students will communicate algebraic concepts using multiple representations to reason, solve problems, and make connections within mathematics and across disciplines.

Concepts include:  numeric and non-numeric patterns, data use in tables and graphs, algebraic models with objects, number lines, symbols, and quantitative changes with addition and subtraction, symbolic representations of addition and subtraction equations

 
Students will communicate data analysis/probability concepts using multiple representations to reason, solve problems, and make connections within mathematics and across the disciplines.

Concepts include:  data analysis with horizontal and vertical bar graphs, comparative language to describe data, probability concepts

                                                             Science

Understand Earth's surface is always changing.
Understand that weather occurs in the atmosphere and is the interaction of many factors.
Understand that sound and light are forms of energy that travel in waves.
Understand the interactions of plants and animals that occur in a food chain.

                      Social Studies

Demonstrates use of map keys and primary and intermediate compass directions.

Describes different aspects of a Native American culture.

Describes life for the early settlers of Jamestown.

Give examples of how our country's founders and events contributed to the

founding of America.

Explains the different ways people can be responsible citizens.

Describes the interactions of consumers and producers.

Compare and contrast a U.S. community to one other community.
