We had a busy and productive week. The children worked very hard.
Kylie will be our Star Student of the Week!
Brittany took Koko home for the weekend. We will hear about their fun activities on Monday.
Their presidential posters are amazing!! We all learned a lot about each president that was researched. Their posters are on display in the hallway for all to enjoy. I am also in the process of adding a picture of each poster to our classroom websites.
Their scarecrows are also on display in the hallway. I definitely have a creative group of third graders.

We are off to another wonderful week of learning!!
The children worked very hard on the Terra Nova Tests last week!! I am very proud of their diligence and effort.
The entire team turned in their FRED calendars last week. We celebrated by eating together last Wednesday. They read for over 15,000 minutes!!
Jordyn will be our Star Student of the Week!
Austin took Koko home over the weekend. We will hear about their fun adventures on Monday.
We will take several reading tests throughout the week. The class will take a skills test as well as a holistic comprehension test.
There will be early dismissal on Friday because of teacher training.

Terra Nova Testing will be all Week!! There is a great practice site for Terra Nova under Sites of the Week. The children can bring a healthy snack and drink to school each day.

Wow!! We had a busy week, and the children worked very hard.

Mrs. Bauer and Mrs. Horbach have been busy planning our first party of the year. I sent a note home on Friday for additional items needed for the party. Our Halloween festivities begin on Friday, October 31st at 2:00.
This week we will celebrate "Red Ribbon Week". The student council has many fun activities planned. Weather permitting we will participate in a Drug Free parade around the neighborhood on Thursday.
We have two big essential objective tests this week. On Wednesday, the class will take their first science test which will focus on Weather Instruments. The children brought home their science journals and review test to study and prepare over the weekend. On Thursday they will take essential objective 1 in math which centers on Place Value. You will find several great math sites for Place Value under Sites of the Week. These activities will help students practice for the test on Thursday.

Parent-Teacher-Student conferences are this Tuesday and Wednesday evening. The children have a lot to share and are very excited!! Be sure to stop by the Book Fair. The PTA has done an amazing job once again!!
Wow!! We had a busy week, and the class worked hard. Our American Indian posters should be finished on Monday. The children have spent a lot of time researching their group.
We took essential objective 3 in math. Last week, we began our unit on place value.
There will be no school on Friday, October 17th.

All FRED readers who met the goal of reading 350 minutes will eat lunch together on Monday. I will provide the drink for each child.
The team will take the Essential Objective 3 test in math on Tuesday. Students will subtract four-digit numbers with regrouping.

The carnival was a huge success!! Thanks to all the parents who helped out and sent in items for our carnival basket. Our gadgets and gizmo basket was amazing! Thanks for your generosity.
We will not have a new story this week in reading. The children will be taking several tests since it is the end of our first unit. We have started our subtraction essential objective in math. Any help at home with basic subtraction facts would be beneficial. The students will also be giving speeches on Thursday and Friday. They completed a T-chart focusing on their main ideas and supporting details. They will be writing a paragraph for their speech and putting their key ideas on note cards. Students will have several days to practice at home before presenting their speeches.
Thanks to Brian for taking care of our class pet Koko last weekend. Koko will spend this weekend with Alex's family.
We had a great time participating in the tenth annual Oreo project. You will have to check out the link on our classroom website.
It is hard to believe conference time is right around the corner. On Monday, conference sheets will be sent home to help in planning a time that will accommodate your schedule.
September 8th-12th, 2008
What a busy week for just four days!! Curriculum night is Monday September 8th from 3:45-4:45. We will have handouts explaining the third grade essential objectives and information on grading. The third grade curriculum will also be on display. The grandparent's dinner will follow from 5:00-7:00 on Monday evening.
The children took their first essential objective in social studies on Thursday. I was very proud of how hard each child studied for the test. I shared the results with each child on Friday. I will send home a copy of the results in their Monday folder.
We have 45 Nebraska postcards for our State-to State postcard exchange. We will be sending out 63 postcards to all the states the first week in October.
Ben S. will be our first Star Student of the Week. We are excited to learn more about Ben!
Our classroom has adopted a pet Beagle named Koko!! The children are very excited. Koko will be going home with a different child each weekend. As Koko visits each home a journal will be kept by the student who is taking care of her. The journal will be called "Koko's Weekend Adventures". This weekend Koko is staying with Jordyn and her family. Jordyn will share with the class on Monday. I wonder if Koko will have the opportunity to watch the Husker game? ☺ Go Big Red!

I hope everyone had a fantastic Labor Day!! We are ready for another busy week of learning and fun!
The children are doing a fantastic job getting their planner signed each evening. The team is working hard to remember to highlight in yellow any unfinished work for the day. The incomplete work is then put in their homework folder which is in their binder they take home every day. Any homework should be returned to school the next day. Thanks!!
The class will take their first essential objective test in social studies on Thursday. They will take home their social studies journals and books to help them prepare for the test.
The children are excited about our new class pet, a beagle, named Koko. Since we can't have furry pets in the classroom, the class decided a Webkinz would be a great addition to our third grade team. The children will be taking care of Koko, since I have no clue about taking care of a Webkinz. ☺ The third graders asked if they could take turns taking Koko home for the weekend, and I thought it would be a wonderful idea. We will be keeping a weekend journal of Koko's activities and events as she visits your home.
August 25th-29th, 2008

We had a fantastic week! The children have done an outstanding job getting back into the routine of school. I am very proud of how hard they have worked. I am very impressed that all the children are remembering to get their planners signed each evening. Thanks to all the parents for your help. Any homework your child has for the day will be highlighted in yellow in his/her planner. They have a homework folder in their binders for any unfinished homework for the day. The children know that any homework needs to be returned the following day.
Monday is picture day so bring your smiles. We will also have a math test on Monday. The team will take a spelling and dictation test each Friday.
Don't forget to check out our first internet project "A Room With a View". We just need to add a description of our view.
The class is also working on creating graphs that will be posted under "Meet our Class". Each child surveyed the team to find out some their favorites.
There will be no school on Monday, September 1st because of Labor Day.

May 11th-15th
The children were amazing at the Mother's Day Tea!! Thank you to all the moms and grandmothers who made time in their busy schedules to attend.
We all did an E.O. dance Friday after the class took the last essential objective for third grade. Some students will be retaking E.O.'s this week if they received a beginning or progressing.
Field day and the FRED movie will both be held on Tuesday. The movie will be in the morning and field day is in the afternoon.
Report cards will be sent home in the mail.
We are off to our last wonderful week in third grade!!
May 5th-9th
The children are very excited about our Mother's Day Tea on Monday at 2:00. They are ready for this special day to honor mothers and grandmothers.
Thank you to all the parents who helped out on the field trip to the zoo! It was a beautiful day!!
WOW!! The children took many essential objective tests last week. They will finish several more this week. On Monday, the children will finish their social studies E.O. by completing a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting Bellevue, Nebraska to Honolulu, Hawaii. For the content area writing essential objective, each child will select one of the two listed communities and write an essay focusing on the community.
They will present their speeches on Tuesday and Wednesday. They brought their note cards home over the weekend to practice.
On Friday, they will take the second half of the science essential objective centering on light. The children will take their science journal home on Wednesday and Thursday to help them prepare and study for the test.
We are off to another GREAT week!
April 28th-May 2nd
The children had a fantastic week!! Our Mother's Day Tea is on Monday, May 5th. The children have been working hard to prepare for this very special day!!
You will find the results of your child's essential objective test focusing on fractions in his/her Monday folder. The team did an outstanding job!
This week the children will be taking many tests. On Monday and Tuesday the class will be writing a personal narrative. They will also be writing and presenting a speech for essential objective 1 in language arts. A holistic and skills test will also be given for reading. On Thursday, the children will take an essential objective test centering on heat. On Friday, each child will complete a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting Bellevue, Nebraska with Honolulu, Hawaii. WOW!
In the midst of all the testing this week, the third grade classes will be going to the zoo. Thanks to all the parents who will be joining us on Wednesday. Thanks also to all the families who sent in zoo passes. It will be a fun and educational day. We have several activities planned for the zoo including a scavenger hunt.

April 21st-25th, 2008
Thank You Mr. Davidson for setting up a fantastic field trip!! Our visit started out where the City Council meetings take place. After visiting with the major and city commissioner, we got to make our own law for the city of Bellevue. Then we walked to the fire station where we got a tour from fire investigator K.C;. Bang and met the fire dog Conan. Our next stop was Washington Park for lunch. Before all the third grade classes ate, we met with many of the Bellevue Police in the park. We got to see a demonstration from the Bellevue Police dogs. They were amazing. I am in the process of creating a video of our wonderful day!

We have gotten many flat people back. I am impressed with all the materials sent with each flat person. We are learning so much about other countries and states. We are in the process of writing thank you's to each person who took our flat people on an adventure.
We will begin our math unit focusing on fractions this week. I will give the essential objective test next week. The children are currently comparing and contrasting the city of Bellevue with Honolulu. Hawaii for the last social studies essential objective. In science, we are learning about heat and light.
The children a getting very excited about the Mother's Day Tea. We look forward to seeing all mothers on Monday, May 5th. Grandmothers are also welcome.

We are off to another great week of learning!!
The children did an outstanding job on the math essential objective test focusing on symmetry. On Tuesday, the class will take a social studies essential objective test centering on consumers and producers. Each child brought his/her social studies journal and book home over the weekend to study for Tuesday's test. The science essential objective test for mixtures and solutions is a performance test. After students define and explain what mixtures and solutions are, they will create several mixtures and solutions from materials I will provide.
The science fair is on Thursday from 3:30-5:30. Many children from the room will have an exhibit. Our class also has a science project we will share centering on our Lucky Charm Project. I hope everyone will stop by to view these great projects.
Third grade has two field trips coming up, and we are still looking for parent volunteers to help out. Please let me know as soon as possible if you are interested in attending.

March FRED Calendars Due on Tuesday
We had a wonderful time at Fontenelle Forest last Tuesday. The children were very excited to share with you what they discovered in their owl pellet. Thank you to Mrs. Stroud for helping out on the field trip!
The children enjoyed sharing their "flat person" to the class. I am very impressed with each child's creativity. We should have each child's "flat person" in the mail and on his/her adventure by Tuesday. Thank you for sending in an address and helping your child create a "flat person".
The children will take the geometry essential test in math this Friday. Next Tuesday, they will take a social studies essential objective focusing on consumers and producers. Their social studies journals will be sent home on Friday so they have the weekend to study and prepare for Tuesday's test.
I was very impressed with how well the class did on their reading tests last week. I will send home a copy of the results in each child's Monday folder.

Week of March 25th-28th, 2008
I hope everyone had a fantastic Easter and enjoyed their four day weekend!!
Thank you so much for attending conferences with your child. They were very excited and proud to share their wonderful work! I am in the process of adding each child's Power Point to our classroom website.
On Tuesday, we will be going on a field trip to Fontenelle Forest. It will be a wonderful learning experience for your child. They will be learning about animal trackings, and each child will also have an opportunity to dissect owl pellets. We will leave Fairview at 9:00 and return about 12:30. We will be eating lunch at the forest. The weather sounds wonderful. Please make sure your child wears comfortable walking shoes since we will be taking a long hike.
We have several reading tests this week. The information about the testing is included in the weekly newsletter.
Our class participated in an Internet St. Patrick's Day Project. We were trying to prove that in a box of Lucky Charms there are more clovers than the other marshmallows. You will have to click on the link to our project to view the results and all the participants from throughout the world.

Week of March 17th-20th, 2008
It is hard to believe Monday is the first day of fourth quarter! The children have been very busy! This week is Parent-Teacher-Student conferences. The children and I are very excited to share all the great work they have done over the quarter. I look forward to visiting with all of you!
Seth will be Star of the Week!
Last week the children took several tests. They took a social studies essential objective test focusing on "The Rights of Citizens". The team also took a science test centering on "Changes in Matter". Both tests will be sent home on Monday. I can tell they spent a lot of time studying.
On Monday, our team will take part in a St. Patrick's Day Internet project. Classes from all over the world will be participating,.
As a GROUP -- we will be trying to prove that there are more GREEN CLOVERS (you might call them hats) than any other shape. (Last year the winning shape was stars). Students will count each marshmallow shape and write down their final tally count for that shape! Students should also create a graph to represent their count as well. Students will add their individual count of each shape to a CLASS COUNT. The class will create a final Class Count for their Lucky Charms. The class should also create a graph to represent their Class Count. I will submit our class results. Final results from all participants will be posted on Thursday, March 20th.
Spring Break will be from Friday, March 21st-Monday, March 24th.

Week of March 3rd-7th, 2008

February FRED calendars are due on Monday. We will eat together sometime this week to celebrate!!
The children did an outstanding job on their presidential posters!! I was very impressed with the quality of work. Each child was very proud to share his/her poster. They are on display in the hallway by the media center for everyone to enjoy! I will also put the pictures of their work on our website.
The team enjoyed celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday on Friday by helping to make a delicious breakfast. The children and I made green eggs, ham, and muffins. I have some inspiring chefs in the class. I am in the process of making a slideshow of the day's events. On Monday, we will participate in Read Across America.
We also celebrate Nebraska's birthday on Friday. We learned many interesting facts about our wonderful state. Many student received credits on Friday for answering the trivia question. Happy 141st birthday Nebraska!!
Thank you to all the parents who returned the conference slip. The children and I have a lot of great information and projects to share with you.
The children are in the process of finishing a math, science, and social studies essential objective. They will also be giving another speech this week. Each child will also be given the third quarter miscue. The results of the miscue will be shared at conferences.

Week of February 25th - 29th, 2008

Last week was a busy even with the COLD DAY we had on Wednesday. This weekend felt like a heatwave!!
Conference notes were sent home last week. I have received most of them back. If you haven't already returned the note, please do so as soon as possible so I can give you a time that works with your schedule.
Presidential Posters are due on Monday, February 25th. Many children have already returned their poster. Each child will share their poster and what they learned about the president they selected. It will be a wonderful learning experience for all of us. I will put each presidential poster on our website later this week. Posters will also be display in the hallway for all to enjoy.
Each child brought home their chapter book to read over the weekend. Each guided reading group has been working on writing summaries.
Please continue to have your child practice their multiplication facts daily.
On Friday, we will celebrate Nebraska's birthday and Dr. Seuss's birthday. Special activities have been planned for the day. On Friday, the children and I will be preparing breakfast in the classroom. I hope they bring their appetites on Friday.
Trivia Question ~ How old will Nebraska be on March 1st, 2008. Each child who answers this question correctly by Friday will receive a ten dollar credit. Answers must be written down on a piece of paper.

Week of February 19th-22nd, 2008
I hope everyone is enjoying their extended weekend. I will see all of you back at school on Tuesday, February 19th. I am excited to share a computer program with the students that I learned about on our teacher in-service day. I will be teaching the students how to use Photo Story 3. The children will use this program in place of Power Point for their biography projects.
The Valentine Party was wonderful!! Thanks to Mrs. Horbach for planning such a fantastic party. Thanks to all the parents who helped out by sending in treats or goodies. This weekend I will add our Valentine Party video under Student Work.
The students took several reading tests last week as well as math essential objective 1. I will send home the results on Tuesday.

We will begin several new units this week that are also essential objectives. Citizenship and government will be our focus in social studies. We will begin division on Tuesday, but many children are still struggling with their multiplication facts. I will continue to give multiplication timed tests. Thanks for helping your child practice their facts daily at home. In science, we will begin our study of mixtures and solutions. .



Week of February 11th-13th, 2008
The team took many tests last week. Two of the tests were essential objectives. I was impressed with how well the class did on their social studies test! Thanks for all your help at home.
I will continue to give daily multiplication timed tests this week. Congratulations to Megan who is on her mixed facts. Many students are close behind!!
This week, the children will take several reading tests. The children will take the reading E.O. 4 test which focuses on content area reading. They will also take the reading skills test on Tuesday. Information on both tests can be found in the weekly newsletter.
On Wednesday, students will take the math E.O. 1 test which centers on place value and comparing numbers.
Our Valentine's Party is on Wednesday at 2:00. Mrs. Horbach has done an outstanding job organizing and planning the party. The children and I are looking forward to our last P.T.A. party of the year. I am excited to see the Valentine containers each student created at home.
Teachers have an in-service day on Thursday, February 14th, so there will be no school for students. Happy Valentine's Day!
School will resume on Tuesday, February 19th. Have a Great Winter Break!!

Tanner is Star Student this week!
The children did an amazing job on their book jacket projects. I should get all their projects uploaded under "Book Projects" this weekend. They were very proud to share their work.
I was very impressed with the results of the science essential objective test. WOW! Many students received an advanced.
The students will take the essential objective test in social studies focusing on "Our Founding Fathers" on Tuesday. They brought their social studies journals home today to have extra time to study and prepare for the test over the weekend. They will also be sent home on Monday. All the information needed for the is in their journal.
On Wednesday, each child will take his/her essential objective test in math. The E.O. centers on multiplication facts through nine. I will continue to give daily multiplication timed tests.
On Thursday, they will take the chapter six math test.
Remember to check under February Calendar of Events to keep updated on school, district, and classroom happenings.
Monday is the last day to turn in January FRED calendars. All students who participated will be eating lunch together in the classroom on Monday.

Week of January 28th, 2008
Taylor is our Star Student this week!
Third graders will be taking the district writing test on Tuesday and Wednesday morning. The test will be given in two twenty minute periods. The children are definitely ready! Ask your child about the practice writing we did last week. They should be able to tell you about their audience catching topic sentence and conclusion, all the great story transitions they used, the many adjectives they added to the nouns in each sentence, and the great paragraphs focusing on the beginning, middle, and ending of their narrative.
On Tuesday, the class will be taking the essential objective 4 test in science. Each child brought his/her science journal home over the weekend to study and prepare for the test focusing on weather. I will also send science journals home on Monday.
Thursday, January book projects are due. Each child will share his/her book jacket on Thursday. The genre the children were to read for this project was a mystery. If your child needs any supplies from school please let me know.
January FRED calendars are due on Friday, February 1st. All students who turn in their January FRED calendar will eat in the classroom with me sometime next week.
Banking day for students will be on Friday!! Jessica will be our banker this week.
Week of January 21st, 2008
There will be no school on Monday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King. We celebrated his birthday on Tuesday. We read several books, and each child wrote about their own dreams for him/herself, their family, the country and world. They created a handprint silhouette to go around their writing.
The team had a fantastic day on Friday celebrating the 100th Day of third grade and learning. We did several activities focusing on this special day. You will have to check out our slide show on our 100th Day activities found on the student work link above.
This week, we will spend a great deal of time fine tuning our writing skills for the district writing test next week. I am planning on giving the two day writing test on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Please remember to practice your multiplication facts daily. New guided reading books were sent home on Friday for students to read over the weekend.
Each third grader also brought home an ABC chart and books centering on a historical person they wanted to research. Students are to come up with a factual sentence for each letter of the alphabet centering on the person they selected. They are to come up with as many words as they can beginning with each letter they are writing about. Example for Letter A ~ (Albert Einstein) Albert Einstein was an amazing scientist. This week during computer lab, each student will begin creating a PowerPoint presentation on their historical person.
Ask your child about the fun science investigation we did this week focusing on properties of air.

Third Graders will be taking the CogAT test on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday morning.
We will have art with Mrs. Campbell on Tuesday.
Next Monday, January 21st, there will be no school in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King.
January book projects are due on January 31st. I sent home information in last Monday's folder. You may also look under our Monthly Book Project link if you have questions.
We started two new essential objectives. In science our E.O. will focus on weather. A New Nation and our Founding Fathers will be the social studies objective we will learn about over the next several weeks.
The district writing test will be given to all third graders the last week of January.

Ask your child about the personal narrative they wrote on Thursday and Friday. I was very impressed with the improvements. They are writing amazing topic sentences and conclusions. The details and word choice they are including in each sentence is unbelievable. Most children are remembering to include story transitions in their sentences. I have a fantastic group of writers.
Third graders, remember to practice your multiplication facts every day.

It sounds like everyone enjoyed the snow day. The children did an excellent job on their essential objective test in science. I can tell each child studied hard.
Half of the class gave their speeches today. The rest of the children will give their speeches tomorrow.

Remember to study for your essential objective 3 science test. All the information you need is in your science journal. The test will be on Wednesday.
Also remember to practice your speeches. Each student will have the opportunity to present their speech sometime this week!
