Mrs. Tirado's Classroom Expectations & Discipline
In our classroom, we must work together and care for each other. I have these three simple rules in my classroom:
1. We will be respectful. (We discussed how to be a respectful listener, respectful of property, respectful of others using kind words and actions.)
2. We will be responsible. (This includes responsibility for their actions and daily assignments.)
3. We will be safe. (Students have to feel safe and be safe around others to have the best academic experience.)
I can incorporate and reinforce everything with these simple rules. If these rules are not followed, each situation will be enforced by using the Boys Town Education Model. Every staff member at Wake Robin implements this model. Individual consequences vary from teacher to teacher. The general format, however, is uniform in procedure. Some examples of Boys Town Model Skills include: Following Directions, Saying You’re Sorry, Accepting Compliments, Disagreeing, and Greeting Others.
Consequences-VERY IMPORTANT!!!
Please check the inside of your child’s Friday Folder every week AND sign or initial next to the star sticker or comment from me. I will date the inside of the folder and if there is a sticker, your child had an excellent week. If there is a number instead of a sticker, it will tell you the number of times your child had to visit the pink book that week. The pink book is a way to document undesired student behavior. A student visiting the pink book signs his/her name and I write in the reason for their visit. A student is given a warning before visiting the pink book unless it is something serious such as hitting/kicking or lying. Students who do not help us achieve our classroom goals will have these consequences:
· First visit to pink book-lose five minutes of recess time
· Second visit-lose ten minutes of recess
· Third visit-lose the entire recess
· Fourth visit-parents contacted
*Hitting/kicking/hands on others is an automatic entire recess
I have students walk, jog, skip, or hop on the four square or hopscotch lines when they owe recess, so that they are still burning energy. Students may also be asked to write a letter of apology or may come home with a student behavior report or note. If your student comes home with a behavior report or note, please sign it and send it back to school immediately.
J Good behavior is rewarded through positive praise, stickers, notes, etc. Each student has a sticker chart in his/her desk. When the sticker chart is full, students can choose from rewards such as eating in the classroom with a buddy, reading a book to a Kindergarten class, extra computer time, etc.
School Work:
For the most part, any work done during the week will be returned to each student and sent home on Fridays. On Fridays, your student should bring home their Friday Folder. Please take a close look at all that comes home. You can enjoy your child’s work with them over the weekend. Work on display will be sent home after a few weeks. Please return the Friday Folder on Mondays. Student work sent home in the Friday Folder does not need to be returned.
HOMEWORK
In first grade, students are expected to practice for their weekly spelling tests and read the decodable book that will be sent home at the beginning of each week (starting Aug. 17) to a family member. The decodable book is a copied book and your child is welcome to keep it. Some students in the past liked to color the pictures at home. If the book is “easy” for your child, please have him/her practice reading at an appropriate, smooth pace and practice using expression to reflect the punctuation. If your child reads their decodable book satisfactorily to you and does not want to keep it, please send it back to school in your child’s Friday Folder the following week and I will reuse it next year! Thanks! Please read our weekly newsletters to keep up with skills we are working on and practice them at home. READING EVERY NIGHT TO A FAMILY MEMBER, FRIEND, DOG OR CAT IS A MUST!
SPELLING
Students receive spelling lists every Monday or the first day of the week. I will give students a pre-test on the first day of the week. The pre-test and actual word list will be sent home on the first day of each week. Students need to practice during the week. The final test will be on Friday (or the last day of the week) and will be sent home in the Friday Folder. I will record the grades ahead of time, so you may keep the test. Check that your child has a spelling list on MONDAY/first day of the week. *The first spelling list will be sent home on Monday, August 17!
Illness
If you know ahead of time that your child will be absent, please let me know and I will do my best to get you any work prior to your child being gone. If your child has make-up work after they return to school, I will send it home with a note. Please write a note when your child is absent so that it can be filed in the office.
*Just a reminder that students are not allowed to bring birthday treats or invitations to school. Thank you.
