- Fort Stanwick was built (1758) to protect the early European
settlers against attacks
- A battle of the American Revolutionary War was fought over the Fort
and the Fort never surrendered.
- Rome was home Francis Bellamy, author of the Pledge of Allegiance.
(He is buried there.)
- The Erie Canal was built (beginning in 1817) through the center of
the town and can still be viewed today
- The city of Rome became a city in 1870.
