History:      
  • Old Spanish town of Alburquerque was founded in 1706 by Spanish conquistadores
  • viceroy of New Spain ruled from 1702 to 1710
  • During the Civil War in late February 1862, the city was filled by Confederate troops under General Henry Hopkins Sibley. They fought the Union troops April 8, 1862 in Albuquerque
  • Late 1940s and 1950s became center for atomic research
