Firefly

  • Firefly larvae (the little worm-like part of their life cycle) and adult fireflies are found near rotted wood around ponds and rivers.  They also live in people's yards in some parts of the World.
  • They usually live in the warm, humid parts of the World. But, some kinds of fireflies are found in desert areas.
  • They have a chemical in their abdomens which glows in the dark.  The light flickers on and off.  We are not sure how they turn their lights off and on.
  • The larvae eat dead earthworms, snails, and other kinds of dead things.
