Young children (and all other children regardless of age) love learning about dinosaurs. This is a simple web activity. This could be used as a beginning report activity. Objectives:
Materials Needed:
- Use a web site to collect information on a dinosaur.
- Select and write facts about a dinosaur of choice.
- Use facts to write a simple report.
- Draw a picture of chosen dinosaur.
Process:
- Student fact sheet down-loaded from web page.
- About two 30 minute computer lab periods for collecting facts.
- Crayons and paper for drawing dinosaur for each student.
- Have a collection of books on dinosaurs for extra resources in the classroom.
- Down-load the fact sheet and make copies for each student.
- Prior to going to computer lab, explain process to your students.
- Help students access the scavenger hunt. Model how to get to the web site and how to fill in information on their fact sheet.
- Once students have their information sheet filled out, model how to use facts to write a report on the board or over-head.
- Have students write a rough draft of their report.
- Help students proofread their rough drafts.
- Have students write a final copy and draw a picture of their dinosaur.
- Copy students work and combine for a class book. (You could have students type their reports using a word processor.)
- Students could orally read their reports to the class as a culminating activity.
