Website Evaluation Checklist

Lesson Plan for Teacher

The Internet
How Do I Decide If a Website Is a Good One?

Probably the most difficult task anyone has to do these days is decide whether or not a website is a good one or not.  Anyone can make a website and write about anything.  Below you will find some websites.  Are they True or Made-up (bogus)?  Let's take a look.

http://home.inreach.com/kumbach/velcro.html Velcro Crop

http://www.buydehydratedwater.com/ Dehydrated Water

One thing that might help you decide is to look at the domain name.  A domain name tells you if a site is a .com, .org, .gov, .mil, .kids, or .edu.  It will help you decide why the site was created.

What to do?
(Use the Website Evaluation checklist to write your impressions of the site.)

1.    Click on the Google website below.  Scroll through each link and read the description and look at the address below it.

Google:  "Nebraska History", Altavista: U.S.A. History or Altavista: "Ancient History"
2.  Select a website that sounds interesting to you.
3. Use the Website Checklist to decide if this is a good site to use for a report.  Fill out all the blanks.
4.  If you have time, try more websites.  You will need extra website checklist blanks.
5.  Be sure to put your opinion of the site on your checklist so you can share it with your class.
