ABBOTT & FENNER SCHOLARSHIP

Award:  $1,000                            Deadline:  June 19, 2010

Criteria:  This is really an essay contest open to a wide range of students aged 16 to 30 in high school or college.  It simply asks you to write an essay (500 to 1,000 words) about their annual topic and e-mail that essay to them.  See the details and the latest essay topic at www.abbottandfenner.com where you click on Scholarships.

 

AFRICAN-AMERICAN HERITAGE OBSERVANCE COMMITTEE SCHOLARSHIP

Award:  up to $300                     Deadline:  April 15, 2008

Criteria:  Student must plan to attend college, vocational school or business school.  Considers the applicant’s attitude and meaningful contributions to the school and community.  Requires a 3.0/5.0 GPA, an essay about a role model who has had the most significant impact or influence on your life, and a counselor evaluation form.

 

AIR FORCE AID SOCIETY:  GENERAL HENRY H. ARNOLD EDUCATION GRANT PROGRAM

Award:  $2,000                             Deadline:  March 12, 2010

Criteria:  Student must be the dependent of an active, retired, or deceased Air Force member.  Requires a minimum 3.0/5.0 GPA, enrollment in a two- or four-year DOE-approved institution, and financial need.  Go to www.AFAS.org and hover over Education Programs to find a link for the Arnold Ed Grants where you can read the details and either fill in or download the application.

 

AIR FORCE ASSOCIATION:  AK-SAR-BEN CHAPTER GENERAL MARTIN G. COLLADAY SCHOLARSHIP

Award:  $1,000                            Deadline:  March 23, 2009

Criteria:  Offered to seniors who plan to pursue a technical academic program at an accredited college or university and have a long-term goal of an Air Force career.  Considers academic achievement, extracurricular activities, and work experience.  Requires at 3.8/5.0 GPA, a short essay, transcripts, and a letter of recommendation.  2009 Application

AIR FORCE SERGEANTS ASSOCIATION/AIRMEN MEMORIAL FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS

Award:  up to $3,000                     Deadline:  March 31, 2009

Criteria:  Students interested in attending an accredited college or university must be the dependent of an active duty, retired, or veteran Air Force, ANG, or AFRC enlisted member to apply.  Requires a 4.5/5.0 GPA, SAT or ACT scores, an essay, and a letter of recommendation.  The same application applies for several other AFSA scholarship programs.  See www.afsahq.org  and look under Services for Educational Assistance for details and the application.

 

AIR FORCE SERVICES CLUB MEMBERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Award:  from $1,000                      Deadline:  July 1, 2009

Criteria:  Offered to children or other dependents of Air Force Clubs members (and the member or spouse) who plan to attend an accredited college or university in the fall.  Requires a 500-word essay on the topic of the year and either a letter of acceptance or official transcripts from the college or university.  See www.AFClubs.net and click on Scholarship Programs for details. 

 

AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP

Award:  $1,500 to $2,500               Deadline:  May 1, 2009

Criteria:  Category A of this scholarship is for students who will attend a two-year or greater air traffic control program at an approved school and Category B is aimed at students planning to attend an accredited college or university half or full-time to get a bachelors degree in an aviation-related field. Considers aviation-related experience and financial need.  Requires an essay, transcripts, and two letters of recommendation.  There is also a category of this scholarship for dependents of Air Traffic Controllers that does not require a specific area of study.  See www.atca.org for details and the appropriate application.

AK-SAR-BEN COMMUNITY COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP

Award:  $500/semester renewable for second semester                Deadline:  March 13, 2009

AK-SAR-BEN IKE FRIEDMAN STUDENT LEADERSHIP AWARD

Award:  $2,000                             Deadline:  March 30, 2009

ALEGENT HEALTH DIVERSITY HEALTH CARE SCHOLARSHIP

Award:  $2,000 or more (renewable)         Deadline:  May 1, 2009

Criteria:  Preference goes to high school seniors who will major in a health related field, such as nursing, allied health, or health care management.  Considers academic achievement, leadership qualities, and community involvement.  Priority is given to those who have participated in volunteer and /or medical science programs at an Alegent Health facility.  Requires a GPA of 3.5/5.0, a short essay, transcripts, and two letters of recommendation.

 

ALEGENT HEALTH FOUNDATION:  HANS M. LINK HEALTHCARE EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP

Award:  $1,000  renewable              Deadline:  April 1, 2009

Criteria:  Students must plan to study for a career in healthcare at an accredited school.  Not open to students preparing for a doctoral degree.  Preference is given to those with a personal or family affiliation with the Immanuel Medical Center or the Immanuel Health Systems.  Considers financial need and academic performance.  Requires a copy of the SAR, transcripts, and two letters of recommendation.  Call 343-4438 for information and a copy of their current application.

 

ALEGENT HEALTH FOUNDATION:  HENRY H. AND MARIE WIEBKE NURSING SCHOLARSHIP

Award:  Varies from $500 to $2,000  renewable             Deadline:  April 1 2009

Criteria:  Students must plan to study for a career in nursing at an accredited school.  Preference is given to those with a personal or family affiliation with the Immanuel Medical Center or the Immanuel Retirement Communities.  Considers financial need and academic performance.  Requires a copy of the SAR, transcripts, and two letters of recommendation.  Call 343-4438 for information and a copy of their current application.

 

ALEXANDER CHRISTIAN FOUNDATION OF NEBRASKA

Award:  $500                                    Deadline:  March 31, 2009

Criteria:  Offered to students who are members of a Christian Church/Church of Christ in Nebraska.  The recipient must desire to serve in either a full-time church related vocation of in a non-traditional form of ministry.  Requires an essay, transcripts, two photos, and three letters of recommendation.  See www.acfnebraska.com for details and the application.

 

ALL OUR KIDS, INC. SCHOLARSHIP

Award:  Varies, renewable            Deadline:  May

Criteria:  This award is offered to Omaha area students who are being mentored or are willing to be mentored.  The student must also be considered “at risk” or demonstrate financial need.  Considers your commitment to your community, extracurricular activities, and employment.  Selected students are expected to be involved in a community service project each year.  Requires an essay, transcripts, the Student Aid Report from FAFSA, and two letters of recommendation.  See www.allourkids.org for details or ask your mentor to ask for an application.


* ALPHA DELTA KAPPA SCHOLARSHIP

Award:  $500                                  Deadline:  February 19, 2010

Criteria:  This scholarship is provided by a sorority of Bellevue teachers for a Bellevue East and West Senior (male or female) planning to major in education and enter the teaching profession.  The student must have a 3.0/5.0 GPA, score a 19 on the ACT, and demonstrate leadership. 

 

ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA, DELTA EPSILON OMEGA CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIP

Award:  $1,000                               Deadline:  August 14, 2009

Criteria:  This African-American Sorority offers this scholarship to female seniors who graduate from Nebraska high schools.  The student must have a minimum 3.5/5.0 GPA to apply.  Considers academic excellence, extracurricular activities, and honors or awards.  Requires a one-page essay, a photo, transcripts, and two letters of recommendation.

AMERICAN BUSINESS WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION: EXPANDING HORIZONS CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIP

Award:  Varies                                Deadline:  February 15, 2007 (Not seen in 2008)

Criteria:  This scholarship is offered to anyone who will be a degree candidate at an accredited college or university next year.  They consider academic achievement, community involvement, and your expected cost of education.  Requires a 4.0/5.0 GPA, a resume, transcripts, and three letters of recommendation.

 

AMERICAN BUSINESS WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION:  PLATT VALLEY #5438 CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIP

Award:  $500 or $1,000                    Deadline:  March 15, 2008

Criteria:  Offered to male or female students planning to attend an accredited college or university.  Considers GPA, references, composition, interview, long-term goals and possibly volunteer activities.  Requires transcripts, an essay, and three letters of recommendation.

 

* AMERICAN BUSINESS WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION:  SARPY COUNTY SCHOLARSHIP

Award:  $500                                    Deadline:  February 19, 2010

Criteria:  This will be offered to two students graduating from a Sarpy County high school.  That student must plan to attend a 2- or 4-year degree program starting in the fall.  Requires a minimum 4.0/5.0 GPA to apply.

 

AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Award:  Up to $2,500 renewable             Deadline:  March 1, 2009

Criteria:  Seniors with African American, Hispanic/Latino, or Native American heritage can apply if they plan to pursue a four-year degree in the chemical sciences or a two-year degree in chemical technology.  Considers the academic record, career objective, financial need, leadership ability, extracurricular activities, and community service.  Requires a 4.0/5.0 GPA, transcripts, FAFSA SAR, and two letters of recommendation.  See www.acs.org/scholars for info and forms or to apply online.

 

AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION FOUNDATION YOUTH ACTIVIST SCHOLARSHIP

Award:  $7,000                                Deadline:  November 30, 2009

Criteria:  This is offered to seniors who have demonstrated a strong commitment to civil liberties through some form of activism.  There is a minimum GPA requirement of 4.0/5.0 to be considered.  In order to apply, you must contact the Nebraska ACLU office at 402-476-8091 or info@aclunebraska.org and ask Megan Moslander for details on the interview and application process.


AMERICAN FIRE SPRINKLER ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP CONTEST

Award:  $2,000                                Deadline:  May 3, 2010

Criteria:  This is a different kind of essay contest.  It requires you to read their essay and answer ten questions about that essay on their web site.  It’s an open-book quiz, so not hard.  Your application is simply contact information that can only be submitted using the AFSA web site www.afsascholarship.org as specified in their instructions.  For each correct answer, you get an entry into the contest, which is a random drawing for the cash!  Enter and learn a bit about fire sprinkler systems.

 

AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY:  AVERYL ELAINE KERIAKEDES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Award:  Varies                                Deadline:  March 1, 2010

AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY:  NATIONAL PRESIDENT'S SCHOLARSHIP

AMERICAN LEGION LEGACY SCHOLARSHIP

Award:  Varies up to cost of education                Deadline:  March 1, 2010

Criteria:  This scholarship is offered to students who had a parent who died on active duty on or after September 11, 2001.  The student must enroll as a full-time student at an undergraduate college or university.  This is a one-year award, but the student may reapply each year.  Considers academic achievement, financial need, work experience, school and community activities, educational goals, and leadership.  Requires a photocopy of the deceased veteran’s Certificate of Death (DD1300).  Go to www.legion.org/scholarships to download the application.

 

AMERICAN LEGION:  (YEAR) MAYNARD JENSEN AMERICAN LEGION MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Award:  $500                                  Deadline:  March 1, 2010

Criteria:  Offered to a Bellevue East or West Senior who is a son, daughter, grandson, or granddaughter of a veteran or current active duty military member.  Must be planning to attend college or technical school.  Considers academic records, extracurricular activities and volunteer support to the community.  Requires evidence of the parent's or grandparent's military service (include a copy of their DD Form 214, Military ID, or Active Duty Orders).

AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY/INDUSTRY MINORITY SCHOLARSHIP

Award:  $3,000 renewable once              Deadline:  February 5, 2010

Criteria:  For minority students, especially Hispanic, Native American (including native Alaskan and Hawaiian), and African-American, who intend to major in atmospheric or related oceanic and hydrologic sciences.  Requires an essay, test scores, transcripts and a letter of recommendation.  See www.ametsoc.org and click on the Students tab for more details.

 

AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MILITARY COMPTROLLERS:  GREATER OMAHA CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIP

Award:  $500 (local), $1,000, $2,000, or $3,000 (national)               Deadline:  March 10, 2009

Criteria:  Offered to students entering a field of study related to financial/resource management, (business administration, economics, public administration, computer science, financial operations research, accounting, or finance).  Requires two letters of recommendation, an essay on your career/academic goals, and financial need.  The local winner competes at national level.

 

AMERICAN WELDING SOCIETY, NEBRASKA SECTION SCHOLARSHIP

Award:  $250 or $1,000                 Deadline:  January 9, 2009

Criteria:  Offered to High School students who will be taking welding courses in which tuition, tools, books, or other fees are the student’s responsibility.  The higher value awards are for graduating seniors who will continue their welding education after high school.  There is a minimum GPA of 3.5/5.0 and financial need, while not a requirement, will be used to give some preference.  Considers your interest in the welding industry and requires at least one recommendation form and a copy of your transcripts.

 

AMERICA'S (NEBRASKA) JUNIOR MISS PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIPS

Award:  Varies                               Deadline: March

Criteria:  Winners of awards at the state and national level pageants (this is not a beauty contest) are awarded scholarships and may qualify for scholarships offered by various schools for winners, runners up, or other contestants who enroll at their campuses.  Female seniors interested in competing must attend an information session held by the local organizing committee.  Information about the program, the local information sessions, and scholarships available can be found at www.ajm.org

 

AMERICA’S MILK PROCESSORS AND USA TODAY:  SAMMY (YEAR) AWARDS

Award:  $7,500                               Deadline:  March 6, 2009

Criteria:  Recognizes outstanding scholar athletes.  Judging is base on academic performance, athletic excellence, leadership, community service, and milk experience (Applicants will be required to describe in 250 words or less how drinking milk has helped them with academics and/or athletics).  Students can only apply on the Internet at http://sammy.BodybyMilk.com.

AMERICORPS EDUCATION AWARDS

Award:  up to $4,725                    Deadline:  Volunteer for AmeriCorps anytime online

Criteria:  Students who complete a volunteer program with AmeriCorps, which would include up to 10 months of full-time service that also pays a stipend, would be eligible for an education award relative to the amount of service performed.  For details about the various programs run by AmeriCorps and the process to apply for those programs, visit their web site at www.americorps.org or call them at 800-942-2677.

 

ARMED FORCES COMMUNICATIONS & ELECTRONICS ASSOCIATION (AFCEA) SCHOLARSHIPS

Award:  $500 or more                   Deadline April 5, 2009 (Spring) or October 31, 2009 (Fall)

Criteria:  This organization has a set of scholarships, including one specifically for high school seniors, offered to students studying technical areas such as mathematics, computer science, telecommunications, physics, computer engineering, or electrical engineering.  You can continue to apply each spring or fall during your college years.  Considers scholastic performance, financial need, recommendations, and community or organizational involvement.  Requires that you apply online at www.afcea-omaha.org and have two recommendations submitted at the same site.

 

ARMY EMERGENCY RELIEF (AER):  MG JAMES URSANO SCHOLARSHIP

Award: Varies based on need           Deadline:  March 2, 2009

Criteria:  Offered to dependants of active duty or retired Army personnel.  Student must plan to attend an accredited college or vocational school full time.  Requires transcripts, financial need forms, and military documentation.  See www.aerhq.org/education_dependentchildren.asp for the latest details and to apply online.

 

ASSOCIATION OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY PROFESSIONALS:  OMAHA CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIP

Award:  up to $1,000                         Deadline:  April 4, 2009

Criteria:  Available to students in eastern Nebraska or Western Iowa interested in Information Systems, or IT related fields.  Considers academic achievement, extracurricular involvement, leadership, and your essay on this year’s topic.  Need two recommendations on Form B.  You can also apply and submit recommendations online at www.aitpomaha.com.

 

AXA ACHIEVEMENT COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP

Award:  $2,000                                   Deadline:  February 15, 2010

Criteria:  These scholarships will go to students in the Lincoln/Omaha region who are U.S. citizens or legal residents and who plan to attend a two-year or four-year College or University.  Primary consideration is an outstanding non-academic achievement in an activity at school, in the community, or in the workplace. AXA ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP

Award:  $10,000 (State) or $25,000 (National)         Deadline:  December 15, 2009

Criteria:  Open to seniors who are U.S. citizens or legal residents who plan to attend a two-year or four-year College or University.  Key factors are ambition and self-drive as evidenced by outstanding achievement in an activity in school, the community, or the workplace. AYN RAND FOUNTAINHEAD ESSAY CONTEST

ENGINEERS CLUB OF OMAHA SCHOLARSHIP

ESA FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS

Award:  Varies up to $1500           Deadline:  February 1, 2009

HEARST FOUNDATION:  UNITED STATES SENATE YOUTH PROGRAM

Award:  $5,000                            Deadline:  October 16, 2009

HEARTLAND LATINO LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP

Acacia Fraternity: up to $1,650 (partially renewable) - Male student who excels in academics, extracurricular activities, and community involvement.                    Deadline:  April 1, 2009

Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity:  $1,000 or $250 - Males students who excel academically, are involved in the community, and are active participants in school organizations.                  Deadline:  July 2, 2009

Criteria:  Offered to graduating seniors who are members of one of the Masonic Youth Organizations, Job’s Daughters, Rainbow Girls, or DeMolay.  Requires a statement from your counselor, a statement about your educational goals, a statement from your chapter advisor about your involvement and leadership, and an essay on the topic “What being a DeMolay, Job, or Rainbow has Meant to Me.”

KPE-CONSULTING ENGINEERS SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria:  The award goes to one senior at each school who is chosen based on outstanding academic performance, character, leadership, and school citizenship.  No application is required for this award.  The winner will be selected by the school administration.

Criteria:  In memory of a 1998 Bellevue East graduate who gave his life as an Army soldier in Baghdad, Iraq May 18, 2006, this scholarship is offered to a Bellevue East and Bellevue West senior who will attend any post-secondary institution.  The scholarship will be awarded to a student who is not in the top half of the class, but who participated in community service and has been a good citizen at home, at school, and in the community.

SHARE IOWA - BELLEVUE EAST HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria:  Offered to BEHS seniors who have at least 50 hours of documented volunteer service during the current school year.  Interested seniors must volunteer to help Share Iowa on three Saturday mornings with food distribution at BEHS.  Requires a 3.75/5.0 GPA, a short essay about volunteerism, and two letters of recommendation.

 

SHERIDAN LUTHERAN - WORK AND LEARN SCHOLARSHIP

Award:  up to $4,000 (possibly renewable)                   Deadline:  April 15, 2009

Criteria:  Offered to students who will attend a two- or four-year college next year with preference to someone who exemplifies Christian character and values, but is not necessarily a Lutheran.  There is a related work opportunity that can add to your award or a substitute 75 hour community service requirement.  Considers academic achievement, extracurricular activities and community service, leadership, and financial need.  Requires rank in the top third of your class, an essay about your career plans and special circumstances, transcripts, tax forms, and two letters of recommendation.


SIMON YOUTH FOUNDATION COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Award:   $1,400                          Deadline:  January 31, 2010

Criteria:  The program considers academic record, leadership skills, participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, goals statement, and financial need. Requires an applicant appraisal, transcripts, and tax return information. SOCIETY OF ACTUARIES AND CASUALTY ACTUARIAL SOCIETY DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP

Award:  Varies                            Deadline:  May 2, 2008 (not offered in 2009)

Criteria:  This scholarship is offered to minority students, but other scholarship offers are also available for any student interested in actuarial science.  The minority scholarship requires financial need as shown by the Student Aid Report, transcripts, and two letters of recommendation.  This program is being transferred to The Actuarial Foundation for 2010, so check www.actuarialfoundation.org for new details in the fall.


SOCIETY OF AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERS (SAE) SCHOLARSHIPS

Award:  Varies             Deadline:  December 15, 2009 (University) and January 15th, 2010 (Foundation)

THEATRE ARTS GUILD SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria:  Senior who has excelled in academics and has made meaningful contributions of service to their school and community.  Requires a 4.0/5.0 GPA, active involvement in a community service organization or project, and intent to attend an accredited four-year college or university.   Each high school is limited to one nominee, so we ask for draft nomination forms no later than November 17 from those who wish to be considered. 

 

TUSKEGEE AIRMEN, INC. NATIONAL AND CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIPS

Award:  $5,000 renewable or $1,500 (National) or $750 (Local)     Deadline:  February 2, 2009

Criteria:  For all levels of this scholarship the student must be willing to write an essay about the Tuskegee Airmen.  The larger Pratt & Whitney Golden Eagle Scholarship is reserved for someone interested in a career in aviation, aerospace technology, or research.  Other considerations are academic achievement, school and community activities, and financial need.  Requires a GPA of 4.0/5.0, an essay about yourself, tax info, transcripts, and three letters of recommendation.  The local chapter scholarships in memory of Nobel E. Oxford, Alfonza W. Davis, and AC Lofton are open to students in any major.

ULMAN CANCER FUND FOR YOUNG ADULTS SCHOLARSHIPS

Award:  $2,500                             Deadline:  May 1, 2009

Criteria:  Several different scholarships are offered to students who either have had cancer or who have parents who either have cancer or were lost to cancer.  Two of the awards are open to students outside of Maryland, Washington DC, or Virginia, and one of those is specifically for nursing students.  Only one application can be submitted anyway, so go online at www.ulmanfund.org to find the details, see if this applies to you, and to complete the application online.  Considers financial need, volunteer work in the community, and a short medical history of the cancer patient.  Requires an essay and a letter of recommendation.

USA FUNDS:  ACCESS TO EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIPS

Award:  $1,500 (possibly renewable)                   Deadline:  February 16, 2009

VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS:  VOICE OF DEMOCRACY ESSAY CONTEST

Award:  Varies by level of competition up to $30,000 (national)       Deadline:  November 1, 2009

Criteria:  The Wake Robin PTA is offering a scholarship to one Bellevue East or West student who attended Wake Robin Elementary School for at least FOUR years.  Requires rank in the top half of the class and an ACT score of 20 or better.  This may be used for college or a vocational school.
