INFORMATION FOR PARENTS AND SENIORS
ABOUT THE COLLEGE AND SCHOLARSHIP SEARCH PROCESS
Our goal at Bellevue East School is to simplify the scholarship process and inform you as much as possible of the numerous possibilities available to you and your families. You will find the most up-to-date information for currently available scholarships published in your weekly senior newsletter. We publish a senior newsletter every Tuesday (or Wednesday, if Monday is a holiday). Those newsletters will appear shortly thereafter on this web page.
This web site also lists many scholarships that were offered during the past year. Please keep in mind that the scholarships listed have deadlines and are not available all year. Most colleges and universities manage many more scholarships than we could possibly list.
NOTE: The information and due dates contained in the scholarship list are SUBJECT TO CHANGE from year to year. The due dates listed here may be last year's deadline to be used as a hint where it might fall this year, but some new dates may shift weeks or months in either direction. We try to update those dates once new information becomes available for the current year. Make sure you read the actual scholarship application carefully.
There are 4 major sources of scholarships available. These are:
*Colleges, universities, community colleges, and trade schools
*Civic, church, parent-teacher & other community groups
*Corporations, labor unions & professional organizations
*All branches of the military
The first step in the college/scholarship process is to apply to your choice(s) of college(s). Once your admission has been approved, your information may then be forwarded to the appropriate departments for scholarship consideration. However, you should check with the individual college department for your planned major to see if they have a separate application process. The earlier you apply to your choice of colleges the better chance you will have in being considered for their scholarships. Most schools publish a scholarship deadline.
Next, apply for any appropriate scholarships listed in the senior newsletter. The best avenue to receive scholarships would be through local organizations. Many of these will be marked with an asterisk in the attached lists. The Bellevue Public Schools Comprehensive Scholarship Application will be used to apply for these asterisked scholarships starting about mid-January with a deadline of February 22nd, 2008. Forms for other scholarships listed in our newsletters will be made available in the counseling office. However, many other applications may not circulate through our office, especially those unique to out-of-state schools.
Parents can aid in the scholarship process by providing encouragement or taking action for their student in at least four areas: (1) reviewing the scholarship offerings in the weekly senior newsletter when your senior brings it home or on this website; (2) obtaining application forms; (3) urging the student to complete and turn in the application; (4) meeting scholarship due dates. Some students have demanding class loads their senior year. It is permissible for parents to actively assist with general information sections of a scholarship application. Your student may not be able to answer family financial questions without your help.
A wealth of information regarding scholarships and financial aid is also available via the Internet. These are some of the best web sites for obtaining information and forms:

The EducationQuest Foundation located in Rockbrook Village (11031 Elm St., Omaha, NE 68144; or call 391-4033) gives you the option to use a FREE scholarship search. Also, at their Internet site, www.EducationQuest.org, you can use their FREE Scholarship Quest to find scholarships that may be of interest. They also offer FREE appointments for students and parents to help fill out and submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form. The new form will be available towards the end of the year and cannot be mailed in until after January 1st each year. This form can also be submitted via the Internet at www.fafsa.ed.gov. (Caution: DO NOT use any other web site to file the FAFSA form.)
PLEASE NOTE: You should NOT have to pay for any assistance in locating scholarships or financial aid. If any company solicits you for money regarding locating available scholarships, we recommend you do not participate.
We are more than happy to postmark and mail your college applications, transcripts, test scores, and scholarship applications when they are ready. Be sure to fill out a records release form, which we will hand out in the fall and return it to the counseling office. Without that, we cannot send your transcripts or test scores!
If you have any questions while filling out college or scholarship applications, please feel free to stop by the counseling office and ask to see the scholarship advisor or visit with the student’s counselor for assistance. You can also reach us by phone at the following numbers:
