 Spelling Word & High Frequency Word Practice!  

 Please take a look at this web page for ideas regarding spelling words so your child can continue to review and be successful!

January

Reading:  The Fox & the Stork, A Bed Full of Cats, Me on the Map, and At Home Around the World will be the stories we work with in January.  There are realistic fiction, nonfiction and fiction concepts within the texts.  Other skills that will be developed are Alphabetizing, Retelling,  and the review if Sequencing.

Writing:  The students will enjoy with writing strategies from our Step Up to Writing program.  They will work with first, next and last along with stories and a friendly letter.

Spelling: The long "e" being made by blending "ea", "ee" "y" and with a single "e" will be explored and practiced along with "ed" and "ing" inflections.  We will also work on contractions and word families once again.

MathPlace Value, reviewing Fact Families, Skip Counting, Telling Time and Money will all be worked on throughout the next few weeks.

Social Studies The wonderful contribution of equality initiated by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be our main focus throughout the month.  We will also talk about Rosa Parks and other Famous Americans and their contributions.

Science:  Solids & Liquids, the properties of each and the changes that can be made to objects will be the focus for the 3rd quarter.  The students will have several opportunities to explore various liquids, observe and conduct simple experiments and record results.

HealthGerms, what they are, how they spread and healthy ways to avoid contact and contamination will be taught throughout January.

Art:  We will exercise lessons on recycling and reusing during art this month.  The students will enjoy creating toilet paper tube snowmen and paper towel tube snowmen. 

February

Reading:  Tell Me a Story, My Robot & On the Job with Dr. Martha Smith are the story titles for this month!  One is Fiction, one is Science Fiction and the last one is Nonfiction.  The students will experience a great deal of variety this month. We will work on Alphabetizing, Fantasy vs. Reality, Classifying, Categorizing and Comprehension.

Writing:  Writing about feelings (which corresponds to the health unit we had in Nov. and is a good review), responding to a story, creating an alternate ending & writing a "How-To" Paragraph will be our writing lessons.

Spelling: Long "i" with a magic "e", "s" with the "c" sound, and "ou" words will be our focus.  We will also work on contractions once again.

MathWe have been working with Money all year but our math time will focus on recognizing the coins, their value, adding amounts together, buying items and receiving change.  Telling Time, along with Calendar and Graphing review will also be worked on.

Social Studies President's Day (Focusing on George Washington & Abraham Lincoln) along with learning more about our Government, & the White House will be our main topics.  We will also review Famous Americans and their contributions.

Science:  We will continue with our unit on Solids and Liquids for a few more weeks. 

HealthDental Health will be the focus for this month.  Brushing, visiting the Dentist, cavities and a review of healthy eating will all be included

 Art:     The students will weave a giant mitten that will hold all the animals from the story The Mitten by Jan Brett.  We will also enjoy creating Valentine holders and Valentine Creatures!
