Our Classroom Blog

Here we go again! This year, The Firebird is in the midst of some changes. Each week a group of two or three students will be assigned to record and write about some of the interesting happenings in our classroom. Keep an eye out for weekly additions to this page beginning in September.

Hello. This is the Firebird Blog. This is what happened over the week in Mr. Sims class. Enjoy….

This week in social studies we have been learning about the Northeast. Mrs. Fox gave us a packet that was 14 pages long and we had to complete it by October 9th.

In Reading we are reading a story called The Night of the Pufflings! Our vocabulary words are uninhabited, burrows, stranded, venture, instinctively, and nestles. Uninhabited means an empty land and nothing or no one is there. A burrow is a hole that a snake or a prairie dog digs. If you are stranded that means that you are left in a desert or on an island alone with nothing to eat or help you. Venture is when you walk of to a dangerous place. Instinctively means you do something without thinking. The word nestles means that you snuggle up against somebody. Our class loves reading!

In our class we have an envelope called The Mailbox! The Mailbox is an envelope, and we write complimentary letters to one another then we put the letters in The Mailbox! Soon every single person gets a lot of mail! We love he mailbox! Our class had a great week!

On Monday we did a science experiment on how many drops can you put a coin. We used a quarter, dime, nickel, and penny. Think of a dime. How many drops do you think would fit on a dime? The most was 78 drops on a dime.

On Tuesday we made towers out of news paper. The highest was 24 inches tall. When we began the project we made a prediction. Later we began building the towers which would have taken about 30 minutes. After that we measure everything and we see which one can stand for 30 seconds. That was a great project

On Thursday we made paper bridges. At first we made a prediction. Then we began the process and we only had 15 minutes to build our bridge. Then we found out we had to try fit the most pennies on it. When the test began, the most pennies any bridge held was 87!
