The voice is the writer coming through the words, the sense that a
real person is speaking to us and cares about the message. It is
the heart and soul of the writing, the magic, the wit, the
feeling, the life and the breath. When the writer is engaged
personally with the topic, he/she imparts a personal tone and
flavor to the piece that is unmistakably his/hers alone. It is
that individual something -- different for the mark of all other
writers -- that we call voice. The main focus of voice are:
- Sounds human -- not like technospeak
- Brings the topic to life
- Has the mark of this particular writer
- Is appropriate for the audience, topic, purpose
- Shows conscious concern for reader's interests and
informational needs
- In technical writing, doesn't bore the reader, but doesn't get
in the way either
