Just like anything else, thinking takes practice, practice, practice . . .

WHY WORDMASTER?

What is the goal of the WordMaster program?

The goal is to help HAL students to build and use a powerful vocabulary.

Why do we do this program?

  • Reading comprehension is increased as vocabulary grows.
  • Written expression is improved as vocabulary increases.
  • The vocabulary capacity of HAL students is beyond the grade level words studied in typical literacy programs.
  • For all students, vocabulary is best developed when words are presented orally, and the meanings are explored in depth with the teacher (or other adult)

What about the tests?

  • The tests are given to increase interest and help students set goals.

  • The top ten scores at each grade level comprise our team score for that grade and our students have always exceeded the mean of all teams taking the tests.

  • Students who get at least 14 items correct can be very content with their scores. The test is difficult because not only are the words advanced, but the students must place the words into analogies that require a high level of analytical thinking.
