Third Grade Reading/Language Arts Essential Objectives

 
  1. The student will use clear, coherent oral communication.
  2. The student will produce a written response to express his or her own thoughts and ideas.
  3. The student will write in the content areas.
     
  4. The student will learn and apply knowledge of print, phonological awareness, structural analysis skills, fluency strategies, vocabulary skills, and comprehension strategies to construct meaning of grade level text.
  5. The student will identify and use appropriate resources to locate information to be applied to learning goals.
     




Math
Third Grade Math Essential Objectives

 

  1. The student will identify, write, and order numbers 1,000 to 999,999.
  2. The student will add whole numbers up to 4 digits.
  3. The student will subtract whole numbers up to 4 digits.
  4. The student will tell time in one minute intervals before or after the hour.
  5. The student will know the multiplication facts up through the nines.
  6. The student will know the division facts up through the nines.
  7. The student will identify congruent and symmetrical figures.
  8. The student will name and represent fractions.




Science
Third Grade Science Essential Objectives

 

  1. Students will understand Earth’s surface is always changing
  2. Students will understand that weather occurs in the atmosphere and is the interaction of many factors.
  3. Students will understand that sound and light are forms of energy.
  4. Students will understand the interactions of plants and animals that occur in a food chain.




Social Studies
Third Grade Social Studies Essential Objectives

 

  1. Students will demonstrate use of map keys and primary and intermediate compass directions. 
  2. Students will describe different aspects of a Native American culture. 
  3. Students will describe life for the early settlers of Jamestown. 
  4. Students will give examples of how our country's founders and events contributed to the founding of America. 
  5. Students will explain the different ways people can be responsible citizens. 
  6. Students will describe the interactions of consumers and producers. 
  7. Students will compare and contrast a U.S. community to one other community.




Art
Third Grade Art Essential Objectives

 

  1. Students will recognize art of the past and present.
  2. Students will discuss how art of the past can tell about its creators.
  3. Students will discuss how art can represent a group of people and their way of life.
  4. Students will view and discuss a variety of art from different cultures.
  5. Students will identify and use these elements of art:
    line, shape, space, texture, color, value, and form.
  6. Students will identify and use the principle of design: balance (symmetrical and asymmetrical).
  7. Students will be able to:
    --artistically create and express their product though writing or speaking
    or
    --select a favorite art piece and express their choice through writing or speaking.
  8. Students will use examples of symbols in portraits, illustrations, and architecture.
  9. Students will express themselves through a variety of media, both two- and three-dimensional: painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, textiles.




Health
Third Grade Health Essential Objectives

 

  1. The students will describe the basic workings of the circulatory, respiratory and nervous systems.
  2. The students will explain proper daily and long-term dental care practices and the types of teeth.
  3. The students will describe simple safety principles such as playground and bicycle safety.
  4. The students will describe basic first aid procedures including handling of bodily fluids, the importance of covering your mouth and staying home from school when you’re sick.
  5. The students will explain the food pyramid and the importance of eating a balanced diet.
  6. The students will identify factors contributing to successful relationships with peers including cooperation.
  7. The students will demonstrate how the Boys Town Social Skills can lead to responsible decision –making.
  8. The students will demonstrate knowledge of responsibly handling the increased personal independence that comes with maturing (latchkey situations, personal safety).




Media

  3. The student will participate in a wide variety of activities that involve manipulative skills.
