THE FIVE-FINGER TEST
1. Open the book to the middle. Select a full page of text.
2. Read the page (aloud if possible).
3. Put one finger up for every word you can't pronounce or don't know.
4. If you get five fingers on a page, the book is too difficult to read independently.
5. If you do not get any fingers up, but are reading very slowly and decoding almost every word, you will not enjoy the book.
CAN IT BE FOR ME?
C - Cover - what can you tell about the setting or the main character?
A - Author - do you have a favorite author?
N - Number of pages - how long is the book? How much time do you have?
I - Illustrations - do you want pictures?
T - Title - does it sound good just by reading the title?
B - Blurb - look at the inside flap of the book jacket and see what is written. You can get an
idea of characters and plot.
E - Entirety - do you like the look and feel of the book?
F - First impressions - what is the first line or page? Does it sound interesting?
O - Opinions of others - what do others say about the book? Is is a medal winner?
R - Reverse of title page - on the back of the title page, the cataloging-in-publication information gives a short summary of the book.
M- My friends- what do your friends say about the book?
E- Ending - do you like to read the ending first? Some people do.

Put your library books in a safe place, away from little brothers or sisters and pets
Wash your hands before you look at a book.
Don't do anything else while reading - like eating, drinking, cutting, or pasting.
Remember your library day and bring books back on time.
Turn the pages from the top, not the bottom, near the spine.
Don't put your books in your backpack if you have things in your lunch that may leak.
Remember to use a bookmark to save your place.
Remember, proper handling and care of library materials will make sure lots of people can enjoy them for years to come.
