POLICIES
The mission of the Bellevue Public Schools' library media program is to provide each student with the opportunity to become a lifelong learner who appreciates literature and who uses, produces, and communicates ideas and information in a responsible and independent manner.
PHILOSOPHY
A successful media program provides appropriate learning activities with adequate resources and wide-ranging instructional support of the entire school community. In keeping with this belief, the school library media center should provide physical and intellectual access to a broad range of information and ideas in a variety of formats. It should serve as a learning laboratory for students as they acquire critical thinking skills and problem solving skills needed in an information-driven society. Furthermore, the center should provide an environment in which independent reading is valued and encouraged, where students can expand their imaginations and can delve into areas of personal interest. To this end, the media program should encourage positive attitudes towards reading, and should develop students' abilities to locate, interpret, analyze, evaluate, and communicate ideas and information effectively.
Additionally, the library media specialist should serve as an information specialist, teacher, and instructional consultant with emphasis in traditional as well as technology resources. To ensure a quality program, the library media specialist should provide leadership and expertise in selection and evaluation of library materials in all formats. Finally, flexible access to media programs and facilities is essential so that learners may use a variety of information resources as necessary for success in school, work and personal endeavors. To make learning relevant to students' lives, teachers and library media specialists should work collaboratively to plan activities that offer an integrated approach to using information skills.

INFORMATION LITERACY CURRICULUM
The media curriculum has gone through a major revision and was implemented in the school year 2009-2010. The curriculum is based on the American Association of School Librarians' Standards for the 21st-Century Learner. In these standards, we base our belief that information literacy is crucial to learners and will be the basis of everything they do in their school years as well as the rest of their lives. In addition, Bellevue Public Schools uses a curriculum model called Understanding By Design. In this model, the instructor keeps the ultimate goal in mind and uses objectives and beliefs to get the learner to the desired goal. In the media/information literacy curriculum, the four goals are:
1. To inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge.
2. To draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new situations, and create new knowledge.
3. To share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as members of our democratic society.
4. To pursue personal and aesthetic growth.
Each grade level has these goals in mind and appropriate objectives and activities are planned to meet these goals.

Our Birthday Book Club is a way for the family to honor a child's birthday by purchasing a book for the library. The books have been pre-selected by the media specialist and are some that the school would like to have in the media center book collection. A book plate will commemorate the occasion by including the child's name and birth date. After the book is processed, the student will officially present the book to the school during her/his library class time.
